Starting CPAP therapy can be exciting, but using your machine for the first time can be intimidating. It’s a new device and there are a few things to get used to, including how to properly use it. Thankfully, there is nothing overly complicated about using and maintaining a CPAP machine, but there are a few tips that you can use to get the most out of your new device.

    #1: Use it Every Night

CPAP machines are most effective at treating sleep apnea when they are used every night. Since these machines are used to treat the underlying causes and resulting symptoms of sleep apnea, skipping a night can cause you to lose out on much-valued sleep. It’s not enough to only use a CPAP machine a few times a week or even if you are just feeling tired. You will undoubtedly get the best results by using it every night.

Wherever you go, make sure you bring your CPAP machine with you. If you fly, hike, camp, go on cruises, or travel a lot, you can always invest in a smaller, travel-sized CPAP machine. These smaller devices are much easier to pack and work just as well as your standard device.

    Clean Your Device Regularly

Like anything you own, proper cleaning and maintenance will help you extend the life of your CPAP machine and get the most effective treatment from it. There are many components of your CPAP machine that will need to be cleaned or replaced regularly, including:

    • The tubing
    • The mask
    • The filter
    • The humidifier reservoir

Find more information about CPAP cleaning and maintenance here.

    Fit Your Mask Properly

One of the most common issues new CPAP users run into when they first begin using their machine is a poorly fitted mask. A mask that is too loose can cause air to leak, which reduces the effectiveness of treatment. The air that escapes from the mask can also irritate your eyes and face throughout the night. If your mask is too tight, it will be less comfortable to wear and can even leave marks on your face after the night is over.

Make sure your mask fits snugly around your mouth and nose without feeling too tight or pinching your face. It should feel firm on your face, but not too tight. If your mask seems like it does not fit no matter what you do, try looking for a different type of mask that will be more comfortable for you.

Remember that you will be using your machine every night, so you will want it to be as comfortable as possible.
